What is VicTraffic?

SitePoint was commissioned to design and develop VicTraffic, the official VicRoads iPhone application. VicTraffic allows users to:

  • Access realtime travel times on freeways and major roads around Melbourne.
  • View traffic alerts for all of Victoria.
  • View live traffic camera images.
  • Build and save your favourite routes.

The App was launched by the Victorian Roads Minister Tim Pallas and went straight to number 3 in the Top Free Apps chart on iTunes.

 

 

The SitePoint Solution

SitePoint sources the raw data for travel times from VicRoads servers. Next, we implement the complex business logic that takes the right pieces of data and converts it to meaningful travel times for road and freeway segments. From there we reference our benchmarks for each segment to indicate to the user whether the traffic is light, medium or heavy.

SitePoint also sources the camera images and Alerts directly from VicRoads Servers.

A web service has been developed to allow our processed traffic information to be easily syndicated to other applications, including VicTraffic.

The iPhone app retrieves data from our web service at regular intervals and presents it to the user interface.

One of our favourite features of the App allows users to assemble their own routes for easy access to traffic info for their frequently used trips e.g. Work to Home.

Road segments and their travel times are linked to any relevant traffic camera images and alerts.
